Thomas Rann is increasingly recognised as the most exciting young cellist to have emerged from Australia in recent years.

Born in Adelaide, South Australia, Thomas Rann commenced his cello studies at the age of 9, and relocated to London in 2000 to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Raphael Wallfisch.

In 2004 Thomas Rann won the prestigious Muriel Taylor Scholarship for Cellists (previous laureates include Steven Isserlis, Raphael Wallfisch and Alexander Baillie) , which enabled him to undertake an intensive mentorship in Australia with the Israeli pedagogue Uzi Wiesel, supported by the Australian National Academy of Music.

He has performed at UK venues including Wigmore Hall, St Martin-in-the-Fields, St James' Piccadilly, and at festivals including Verbier, Courchevel, Schleswig-Holstein, Kronberg Cello Festival and Brighton (UK).Thomas Rann's concerto appearances include performances with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Camden Chamber Orchestra and the Melbourne Sinfonia. Many of his performances have been recorded for radio broadcast by ABC Classic FM and the MBS FM Network in Australia.

Highlights of the 2007/2008 season include Thomas' Wigmore Hall recital debut, his debut with the Queensland Orchestra in Australia and a recital at the inaugural Adelaide International Cello Festival.

Throughout his studies, Thomas Rann has received support from the Hattori Foundation, Ian Potter Cultural Trust, Australia Council for the Arts, E.V. Llewellyn Memorial Scholarship, PPCA Foundation and the Tait Memorial Trust.

He is grateful for the use of 1697 cello by Andrea Guarneri , which has been kindly loaned by an anonymous Australian benefactor.
